The most common pest that will appear in spring is slugs. Once the weather turns from freezing cold to a bit milder, the slugs come back with a vengeance. Every single area is different. For example, over 500 billion slugs wake up every year all over the UK, and wreak havoc on gardens. Having a spring clean in your garden is the perfect way to keep the slugs at bay – with a bit of home pest control.

Applying a layer of slug pellets will keep them under control for the spring. You can even use copper tape or eggshells to stop the slimy slugs from crawling towards your plants and eating them up.

Another common pest that wakes up in the spring are aphids. Aphids attach themselves to the young plants and will kill them before they have a chance to grow. You can remove aphids by simply picking them off your plants, and also encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds into your garden.

Remember it’s not just the insects that can hibernate in your garden. Rodents may also have found shelter there, and will be more active during the spring as they start breeding. Check around your garden, sealing off any entry points a rodent can use. You must ensure rodents stay out of your garden, because it’s only a short trip to the house.
